Chandrasekhara Ashtakam -Prayer to Mahakal the Ender of Death

Chandrasekhara Ashtakam

Rishi Markandeya, a prehistoric Hindu sage wrote Chandrasekhara Ashtakam who was saved from the death god Yama at the age of 16. As Markandeya grew up, he became a great devotee of Shiva and on the day of his predestined death, he continued to worship Shiva by meditating with the Shiva Linga. Because of his deep devotion and ongoing worship of Shiva, the emissaries of Yama, the god of death, could not take his life. Yama then appeared to end Markandeya's life by physically hanging the noose around the boy sage's neck. By luck, the trap mistakenly wraps itself around the Shivalingam, and from it, Shiva bursts out, striking Yama for his ferocity. Shiva brought Yama back to life after defeating him in a battle that nearly killed him, but only on the condition that the pious boy would live forever. Shiva then received the moniker Mahakal the Ender of Death as a result of this act.
