tavaiśvaryaṁ yattajjagadudayarakṣāpralayakṛt 

trayīvastu vyastaṁ tisruṣu guṇabhinnāsu tanuṣu | 

abhavyānāmasmin varada ramaṇīyāmaramaṇīṁ 

vihantuṁ vyākrośīṁ vidadhata ihaike jaḍadhiyaḥ || 4 || 


O boon giver! Some fools make arguments--pleasing to the ignorant but really hateful--

to refute your divinity, which creates, preserves, and destroys the world,

which is divided into three bodies (Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva) according to the three Gunas,

prabhinne prasthāne paramidamadaḥ pathyamiti ca |

rucīnāṁ vaicitryādṛjukuṭila nānāpathajuṣāṁ

śiraḥpadmaśreṇī-racitacaraṇāmbhoruha-baleḥ

sthirāyāstvadbhaktestripurahara visphūrjitamidam || 11 ||

alabhyāpātāle'pyalasacalitāṁguṣṭhaśirasi

akāṇḍa-brahmāṇḍa-kṣayacakita-devāsurakṛpā

vidheyasyā''sīd yastrinayana viṣaṁ saṁhṛtavataḥ |

sa kalmāṣaḥ kaṇṭhe tava na kurute na śriyamaho

smaraḥ smartavyātmā na hi vaśiṣu pathyaḥ paribhavaḥ || 15 ||

viya-dvyā pī tārā-gaṇa-guṇita-phenodgama-ruciḥ

pravāho vārāṁ yaḥ pṛṣatalaghudṛṣṭaḥ śirasi te |

jagaddvīpākāraṁ jaladhivalayaṁ tena kṛtamiti

anenaivonneyaṁ dhṛtamahima divyaṁ tava vapuḥ || 17 ||

rathāṅge candrārkau ratha-caraṇa-pāṇiḥ śara iti |

didhakṣoste ko'yaṁ tripuratṛṇamāḍambara vidhiḥ

vidheyaiḥ krīḍantyo na khalu paratantrāḥ prabhudhiyaḥ || 18 ||

trayāṇāṁ rakṣāyai tripurahara jāgarti jagatām || 19 ||

atastvāṁ samprekṣya kratuṣu phaladāna-pratibhuvaṁ

śrutau śraddhāṁ badhvā dṛḍhaparikaraḥ karmasu janaḥ || 20 ||


When a yajna is over, you are always awake to give its fruits

ऋषिणामार्टविज्यं शरणद सदास्या: सुर-गणा: |

क्रतुभ्रमशस्तवत्त: क्रतुफल-विधान-व्यासनिन:

ध्रुवम कर्तुम श्रद्धा विधुरमभिचाराय हि मखाः || 21 ||

kriyādakṣo dakṣaḥ kratupatiradhīśastanubhṛtāṁ

ṛṣīṇāmārtvijyaṁ śaraṇada sadasyāḥ sura-gaṇāḥ |

kratubhraṁśastvattaḥ kratuphala-vidhāna-vyasaninaḥ

dhruvaṁ kartuṁ śraddhā vidhuramabhicārāya hi makhāḥ || 21 ||


O shelterer, that yajna also where Daksha, the lord of creation

धनुषपाण्यरातम दिवामपि सपत्रकृतममुम

त्रासन्तं तेद्यापि त्यजति न मृगव्याधरभासः || 22 ||

prajānāthaṁ nātha prasabhamabhikaṁ svāṁ duhitaraṁ

gataṁ rohid bhūtāṁ riramayiṣumṛṣyasya vapuṣā |

dhanuṣpāṇeryātaṁ divamapi sapatrākṛtamamuṁ

trasantaṁ te'dyāpi tyajati na mṛgavyādharabhasaḥ || 22 ||

svalāvaṇyāśaṁsā dhṛtadhanuṣamahnāya tṛṇavat

puraḥ pluṣṭaṁ dṛṣṭvā puramathana puṣpāyudhamapi |

yadi straiṇaṁ devī yamanirata-dehārdha-ghaṭanāt

avaiti tvāmaddhā bata varada mugdhā yuvatayaḥ || 23 ||

citā-bhasmālepaḥ sragapi nṛkaroṭī-parikaraḥ |

amaṅgalyaṁ śīlaṁ tava bhavatu nāmaivamakhilaṁ

tathāpi smartṝṇāṁ varada paramaṁ maṅgalamasi || 24 ||


O destroyer of love, O bestower of boons, thy play is in the crematorium

Because your companions are ghosts, you mark your body

Ashes of burnt bodies and human skulls are your garlands—all are your rituals

really bad But you are the one who promotes the greatest good

I will remember you. (24)


मन: प्रत्यक्ष चित्ते सविधाविधायत्त-मरुत:

प्रहृष्यद्रोमान: प्रमद-सलिलोत्संगति-दृश्य: |

यदालोक्याह्लादम ह्रद इव निमज्याममृतमये

दधात्यंतस्तत्वं किमापि यमीनस्तत किला भवन || 25 ||

manaḥ pratyak citte savidhamavidhāyātta-marutaḥ

prahṛṣyadromāṇaḥ pramada-salilotsaṅgati-dṛśaḥ |

yadālokyāhlādaṁ hrada iva nimajyāmṛtamaye

dadhatyantastattvaṁ kimapi yaminastat kila bhavān || 25 ||


You are indeed the indescribable truth that yogis realize

By focusing their mind on themselves and controlling the breath

According to the instructions laid down in the scriptures, and realizing that

The fact that they feel joyful thrills and shed tears of great joy;

They enjoy inner bliss as they swim in the pool of nectar. (25)


त्वमरकस्तवं सोमस्तवमसि पवनस्तवं हुतवः

त्वमापस्तवं व्योम त्वमु धरणीरत्मा त्वमिति च |

परिच्छिन्नमेवं त्वयी परिणाता विभ्रति गिरं

न विद्मस्तत्तत्वं वयमिह तु यत त्वं न भावसि || 26 ||

tvamarkastvaṁ somastvamasi pavanastvaṁ hutavahaḥ

tvamāpastvaṁ vyoma tvamu dharaṇirātmā tvamiti ca |

paricchinnāmevaṁ tvayi pariṇatā bibhrati giraṁ

na vidmastattattvaṁ vayamiha tu yat tvaṁ na bhavasi || 26 ||


The wise hold this limited view of you: You are the sun, you are

Moon, you are fire, you are wind, you are water, you are space, you are

The world and you are yourself. But we don't know who you are

No. (26)


त्रयीं तिस्रो वृत्तिस्त्रिभुवनमतो तृणपि सूरां

अकाराद्यैर्वर्णैस्त्रिभिभिदाधत तीर्थविकृति |

तुरीयं ते धाम ध्वनिभिरावरुंधानामनुभि:

समस्त-व्यस्तम त्वाम शरणद गृहात्योमिति पदम् || 27 ||

trayīṁ tisro vṛttīstribhuvanamatho trīnapi surān

akārādyairvarṇaistribhirabhidadhat tīrṇavikṛti |

turīyaṁ te dhāma dhvanibhiravarundhānamaṇubhiḥ

samasta-vyastaṁ tvāṁ śaraṇada gṛṇātyomiti padam || 27 ||


O porter, with the three letters A, U, and M signifies the three

Vedas, three kingdoms, three worlds, and three gods, the word AUM (Om).

Describes you differently. By its subtle sound, the word Om collectively

Denotes you - your supreme transcendental state free from that

Change. (27)


भवः शर्वो रुद्रः पशुपतिरथोग्रः समाहन

तथा भीमेषानाविति यदभिधानाष्टकमिदम |

अमुष्मिन प्रत्येकम प्रविकारति देव श्रुतिरापि

प्रियासमैदाम्ने प्रणिहित-नमस्योस्मि भवते || 28 ||

bhavaḥ śarvo rudraḥ paśupatirathograḥ sahamahān

tathā bhīmeśānāviti yadabhidhānāṣṭakamidam |

amuṣmin pratyekaṁ pravicarati deva śrutirapi

priyāyāsmaidhāmne praṇihita-namasyo'smi bhavate || 28 ||


O, Lord! Bhava, Sarva, Rudra, Pashupati, Ugra, Mahadeva, Bhima, and

Ishan- These eight names of yours are described in detail in the Vedas.

To you, dearest Lord Shankara, of radiant form, I offer

Greetings (28)


नमो नेदिष्ठाय प्रियदव दविष्ठाय च नम:

नमः क्षोदिष्टाय स्मरणय महिष्ठाय च नमः |

नमो वर्षिष्ठाय त्रिनयन यविष्ठाय च नम:

नमः सर्वस्मै ते तदिदमतिसर्वाय च नमः || 29 ||

namo nediṣṭhāya priyadava daviṣṭhāya ca namaḥ

namaḥ kṣodiṣṭhāya smarahara mahiṣṭhāya ca namaḥ |

namo varṣiṣṭhāya trinayana yaviṣṭhāya ca namaḥ

namaḥ sarvasmai te tadidamatisarvāya ca namaḥ || 29 ||


O lover of solitude, my salutations to you who are the nearest and dearest

Far away O destroyer of love, I salute you

The smallest and largest. O three-eyed one, my salutations

You are the oldest and also the youngest. My greetings to you again

And again those who transcend all and sundry. (29)


बहुल-राजसे विश्वोपत्तौ भवाय नमो नम:

प्रबल-तमसे तत् संहारे हराय नमो नमः |

जन-सुखकृते सत्वोद्रीक्तौ मृदाय नमो नम:

प्रमहसि पदे निस्त्रैगुण्ये शिवाय नमो नमः || 30 ||

bahula-rajase viśvotpattau bhavāya namo namaḥ

prabala-tamase tat saṁhāre harāya namo namaḥ |

jana-sukhakṛte sattvodriktau mṛḍāya namo namaḥ

pramahasi pade nistraiguṇye śivāya namo namaḥ || 30 ||


Salutations to you as Brahma, in whom rajas pervade for the creation

of the universe. Salutations to you as Rudra, in whom Tamas prevails

Salutations to you in the form of destruction Vishnu in whom Sattva resides

To make people happy. Salutations to you, O Shiva

Powerful and beyond the three Gunas. (30)


कृष-परिणति-चेत: क्लेशवश्यं कव देवदारम

कव च तव गुण-सीमोल्लंघिनी शाश्वत्दृद्धि: |

इति चकीतामाण्डिकृत्य माम भक्तिराधाद

वरद चरणयोस्ते वाक्य पुष्पोपहारम् || 31 ||

kṛśa-pariṇati-cetaḥ kleśavaśyaṁ kva cedaṁ

kva ca tava guṇa-sīmollaṅghinī śaśvadṛddhiḥ |

iti cakitamamandīkṛtya māṁ bhaktirādhād

varada caraṇayoste vākya-puṣpopahāram || 31 ||


O Bestower, how poor my developing mind, under suffering,

And how limitless is your divinity - eternal and infinite in attributes?

Though terrorized by this, I am motivated by my devotion

Offer the garland of this hymn at your feet. (31)


असित-गिरि-समम स्यात कज्जलम सिंधु-पात्रे

सुर-तरुवर-शाखा लेखनी पत्रमुर्वी |

लिखती यादि गृहीत्वा शारदा सर्वकालम

तदपि तव गुणानामिष पारं न याति || 32 ||

asita-giri-samaṁ syāt kajjalaṁ sindhu-pātre

sura-taruvara-śākhā lekhanī patramurvī |

likhati yadi gṛhītvā śāradā sarvakālaṁ

tadapi tava guṇānāmīśa pāraṁ na yāti || 32 ||


O Lord, if the black mountains are ink, the sea is ink, the branches

A wish-fulfilling tree is a pen, clay writing paper, and if accepted

This goddess of learning writes for eternity, yet its limits

Your virtue will not reach. (32)


असुर-सुर-मुनीन्द्रैरसीतसेंदु-मौले:

ग्राथिता-गुणमहिम्नो निर्गुणस्येश्वरस्य |

सकल-गण-वरिष्ठ: पुष्पदंताभिधान:

रुचिरामलघुवृत्तैः स्तोत्रमेतचक्कारा || 33 ||

asura-sura-munīndrairarcitasyendu-mauleḥ

grathita-guṇamahimno nirguṇasyeśvarasya |

sakala-gaṇa-variṣṭhaḥ puṣpadantābhidhānaḥ

ruciramalaghuvṛttaiḥ stotrametaccakāra || 33 ||


The best of the Gandharvas, Puspadanta by name, composed in Mahana

This beautiful hymn is addressed to the Lord, whom the Rakshasas worship,

The best of gods, and sages, whose praises are sung, who have

The moon on his forehead, and who is without virtue. (33)


अहरहरनवाद्यं धूर्जतेः स्तोत्रमेतत्

पठति परमभक्त्या शुद्ध-चित्त: पुमान य: |

स भवति शिवलोक रुद्रतुल्यसतात्र

प्रकुरतर-धनायः पुत्रवान कीर्तिमांसच || 34 ||

aharaharanavadyaṁ dhūrjaṭeḥ stotrametat

paṭhati paramabhaktyā śuddha-cittaḥ pumān yaḥ |

sa bhavati śivaloke rudratulyastathā'tra

pracuratara-dhanāyuḥ putravān kīrtimāṁśca || 34 ||


A person with a pure heart and great devotion always recites

This beautiful and uplifting hymn to Siva becomes like Siva (Later

death) in the abode of Siva, and found abundantly during his stay on this earth

Wealth, long life, lineage, and fame. (34)


महेशानापरो देवो महिमनो नापरा स्तुति: |

अघोरानापरो मंत्रो नास्ति तत्त्वम गुरुः परम || 35 ||

maheśānnāparo devo mahimno nāparā stutiḥ |

aghorānnāparo mantro nāsti tattvaṁ guroḥ param || 35 ||


There is no god higher than Shiva, and no hymn better than a hymn

In the greatness of Shiva, there is no mantra more powerful than Shiva

There is nothing else to know about Shiva's name, true form

Guru (35)


दीक्षा दानम तपस्तीर्थम ज्ञानम यागदीका: क्रिया: |

महिम्नस्तव पाठस्य कलाम नरहन्ति षोडशीम || 36 ||

dīkṣā dānaṁ tapastīrthaṁ jñānaṁ yāgādikāḥ kriyāḥ |

mahimnastava pāṭhasya kalāṁ nārhanti ṣoḍaśīm || 36 ||


Initiation, charity, penance, pilgrimage, practice in the spiritual life

Yoga, the performance of sacrificial rites - none of these give one-sixteenth.

Reciting hymns on their greatness is part of the merit

Shiva (36)


कुसुमदासननामा सर्व-गंधर्व-राज:

शशिधरवर-मौलेरदेवदेवस्य दास:

सा खालू निज-महिम्नो भृष्टा एवस्य रोशात

स्तवनमिदमकारिषद दिव्य-दिव्यं महिम्नः || 37 ||

kusumadaśana-nāmā sarva-gandharva-rājaḥ

śaśidharavara-maulerdevadevasya dāsaḥ |

sa khalu nija-mahimno bhraṣṭa evāsya roṣāt

stavanamidamakārṣīd divya-divyaṁ mahimnaḥ || 37 ||


Lord of the Gandharvas, named Pushpadanta, servant of the Lord

Deities with the crescent moon on their foreheads. Fallen from his glory

Because of the wrath of the Lord, he composed this very beautiful elevation

Mahatmya Stotra of Shiva to regain his grace. (37)


सुरगुरुमभिपूज्य स्वर्ग मोक्षैक हेतुम

पठति यादि मनुष्य: प्रांजलिर्नाण्य-चेता: |

व्रजति शिव-समीपं किन्नरैः स्तुयमानः

स्तवनमिदममोघं पुष्पदंत प्रणीतम् || 38 ||

suragurumabhipūjya svarga-mokṣaika-hetuṁ

paṭhati yadi manuṣyaḥ prāñjalirnānya-cetāḥ |

vrajati śiva-samīpaṁ kinnaraiḥ stūyamānaḥ

stavanamidamamoghaṁ puṣpadantapraṇītam || 38 ||


If one recites this Avartha with solitary devotion and folded hands

A hymn composed by Pushpadanta, adored by the great gods

The best of sages and the one who gives heaven and liberation, one goes to Shiva

and is worshiped by Kinnars (heavenly beings). (38)


असमाप्तमिदम स्तोत्रम पुण्यम गंधर्व-भाषितम |

अनुपम्यं मनोहारी सर्वमीश्वरवर्णनम् || 39 ||

āsamāptamidaṁ stotraṁ puṇyaṁ gandharva-bhāṣitam |

anaupamyaṁ manohāri sarvamīśvaravarṇanam || 39 ||


Thus ends this incomparable sacred hymn composed by Pushpadanta

The most impressive describes the glories of Lord Shiva. (39)


इत्येषा वाण्मयी पूजा श्रीमच्छंकर-पादयोः |

अर्पिता तेन देवेश: प्रियतम और सदाशिव: || 40 ||

ityeṣā vāṅmayī pūjā śrīmacchaṅkara-pādayoḥ |

arpitā tena deveśaḥ prīyatāṁ me sadāśivaḥ || 40 ||


This Stotra puja is offered at the feet of Shiva. May you always be blessed?

The Lord is pleased with me! (40)


तव तत्त्वम न जानामि किदृशोस्सि महेश्वर |

यादर्शोस्सि महादेव तादृशाय नमो नमः || 41 ||

tava tattvaṁ na jānāmi kīdṛśo'si maheśvara |

yādṛśo'si mahādeva tādṛśāya namo namaḥ || 41 ||


I do not know the truth of Your nature and who You are- O my great God

Salute your true nature. (41)


एककालम द्विकालम वा त्रिकालम य: पथेननार: |

सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः शिव लोके महीते || 42 ||

ekakālaṁ dvikālaṁ vā trikālaṁ yaḥ paṭhennaraḥ |

sarvapāpa-vinirmuktaḥ śiva loke mahīyate || 42 ||


Whoever recites it once, twice, or thrice (in a day).

Shiva, free from all sins. (42)


श्री पुष्पदंत-मुख-पंकज-निर्गतेन

स्तोत्रेण किलबिष हरेण हर प्रियेणा |

कंठस्थितेन पथितेन संहितान

सुपरिणितो भवति भूतपतिमहेशः || 43 ||

śrī puṣpadanta-mukha-paṅkaja-nirgatena

stotreṇa kilbiṣa-hareṇa hara-priyeṇa |

kaṇṭhasthitena paṭhitena samāhitena

suprīṇito bhavati bhūtapatirmaheśaḥ || 43 ||


If a person learns by heart and recites this hymn, from which flowed

The lotus face of the flower, which destroys sin and is beloved by Shiva and

Which promotes the good of all equally, Shiva, Lord of creation,

became very happy. (43)


|| iti śrī puṣpadanta viracitaṁ śivamahimnaḥ stotraṁ samāptam ||
